When i salt capes, i usually have alot of salt laying around that has fallen off of the capes as i work on them. I normally clean it up and throw it out. A friend of mine works at a big commercial taxidermist that has a good reputation and mounts 175-200 deer a year. He said that they use the salt over and over again. What do you think about that?

Yeha i reuse all my salt just put it in a dry place in a bucket or barrel and just stir it every couple days adnt eh moisture will evaporate and the salt can be reused over and over gain. It saves money because using a new bag for every deer would take alot of money.
there are alot of taxidermists that do reuse their salt, but why? Even if you were to use a new bag of salt per deer, and that's ALOT of salt, the cost is still under $5.00. Salting is such a critical and important step why would you skimp in this area when it's so inexpensive to begin with? Use new salt, CHARGE ACCORDINGLY, and forget about it. Alan C.
While salt will kill some bacteria, there is plenty of bacteria that will grow in salt. Get a cheap microscope and see. Plus there are several type of mold that grow in used salt. Just look it up on this here internet!
It only takes about 1/3 of a bag of salt, thats 3 deer to 50lbs, if you are that stinking cheap, you need to find another hobby or we will see you on Judge Joe Brown or maybe Judge Judy for screwing up a mount.
all you have to do is look at all that salt that falls off your skins
and not to mention all the fluids that runn off and drip onto it. this by-product is the inhibitor of bacterial growth and the very thing your trying to eliminate from your skins
