How does one remove dried velvet off of caribou antlers. This has been on for about three years. The antlers were just starting to shed so they were hard underneath. Is soaking reccomended for this? I read in the archives Georges post about wire brushing them clean, but that guy was going to put artificial velvet on and I am just going to stain them. Any help would be most appreciated!

It's ok to soak them to get the velvet off.We mounted a horn mount in velvet, the customer didn,t like the velvet,so he sent it back a year or so later add we soaked it for 4 or 5 days.Start at the tips and peel like a banana.Be careful the antlers will be fragile.Let dry for a few days they should be good to go.As you know they will have to be stained before mounting.Hope this helps.
