washing before salting

is it ok to wash a boar cape before salting and sending the cape to the tannery ? if so what would you recommend that it be washed with or how should i go about doing this?

Let them clean it there. You may cause some havoc but need be use a hose and rinse (no soap) it off well hang to drip well and then salt. The tanneries know how to clean them up and you'll never know it was even dirty or messy when it comes back.

salt , dry , ship . They have relaxers that will clean the cape up real nice . heed Frank's advice.

i have washed all kinds of capes and hides before salting and even fleshing and never had anything bad happen to them. i skin the critter, throw it in the sink with dawn dishwashing liquid and wash. just don`t let it soak for a long time. then drain it and continue. i have done this with fox and coyotes, badgers, all kinds of capes and blood soaked items and never had trouble. have at it.


Sometimes wash first

I sometimes will wash a cape that is very bloody prior to salting. Usually not though. If I do wash them I try to get most of the moisture out and then salt immediately.
