question on form alteration

Submitted by Ty on 02/16/2004. ( ) 165.121.147.43

I want to take my WASCO boar head form and cut a small wedge out of the back so as to tilt the head down a little. My question is what is the best way to reattach the plywood backer to the foam manniken. Should I use bondo or some other adhesive. Also what is the proper way to patch voids (air pockets) in the manniken. Thanks

BONDO

is my preferred method of reattaching a new back board to the head form. With most form companies, some backboards are not taken out to the edge of the mold before being poured, therefore a foam edge of sometimes two inches is found on some forms. You can't staple or nail the skin to the backboard with a foam attachment surface only..so we recut a new backboard and then reattach to the original one......in this instance we staple the two backboards together with a 1 5/8" staple..many of them.
ON repairing the air holes. We first clean the edges out completely to make sure of no more under cutting surface pocketing...then just plaster over the holes and smooth the plaster surface with a water brush when hardening occurs.

Expanding foam

On smaller mannakins I like to use the expanding foam, Great Stuff, you can buy at the hardware store in cans. I use the non flexible type, squirt out a good portion, take a shim and spread it out, then fit the 2 pieces together. The foam expands and fills the gaps, while also being suprisingly stonger with great adhesion. The foam that expands outside the form can easily be cut flush. It may cost a touch more, but it really is easy. I use it on anything deer and smaller.

I use this method when changing profiles in the head and neck also. Works fast, cures nice and there is very little mess. I find that my cuts rarely line up well enough to use a thin coat of bondo.

Just another way to "skin the cat". Good luck
