a customer brought me an old boar mount that was painted black and is now peeling. what would be the best way to strip the paint off ? lacquer thinner or acetone is what i thought of using but i wasnt sure if it would harm the mount. i want to dye the boar once i get the paint off. what type of dye should i use ? thanks, chris

I read the title to your post, and thought maybe you were using some really toxic paint remover! ;P
I don't know, for sure. The customer probably has no idea how it was tanned, either. Have you tried a wire brush? That should get the flakes off. Other than that, do a test on a small area to see what happens before using a paint remover on the rest of it. May want to check out the orange "search" button...there may be info on what you need in the archives.
Be careful when handling old mounts. Some of them were preserved with arsenic....VERY TOXIC! Wear gloves, respirator, etc.!
