Yeah, I used to boil, boil, boil, boil, and scrape too. Cold (or warm) H2O maceration is the way to go!
Another person has tried maceration and likes it - awesome =) Glad you tried it and it worked well for you.
am just trying now to clean a deer skull in the water method, have had it in there 30 days and it seems to be working, and you are right ,a little smelly, how long does this process usually take,
I use the boil method, nut I only boil for about 15 minutes to loosen up the meat and hide, then I set it down in a ant bed. This works well with not the time lapse that you are talking about.
I have been cleaning up an old Dall sheep skull that I found years ago, an apparent winter kill. Scavengers had cleaned almost everything off the skull except gristle. I have been soaking the skull in hot water with a little bit of ivory liquid for several days now and then taking it out and scraping it. I'm gaining but not sure I will ever get all of it off. Does just leaving it soak in water eventually remove everything? How long does it take?
