Pulling Boar Tusks from the Skull

Submitted by Christine on 03/22/2004 at 14:45. ( ) 68.251.72.123

Is there a trick to removing the cutters from a boar jaw without cutting the jaw apart or breaking the tusks? I boiled the head and the whets came out easily but I can't for the life of me pull out the cutters.

(I did do a 'search' but all I found was "boil and pull")

Thanks.

The cutters have to be "rolled" out as they are curved teeth and many times there's as much tooth under the jaw line as above it. If you've boiled it sufficiently, I'd set it in a buck of water for a week or two and then gently pull the tooth out in a rolling manner.

I boil them and then wrap a towl and put a pair of pliers on them and pull. I just make sure that the towl is on them so not to scratch. You might have to work them back and forth.

The worst infection I ever got was from pulling on a hog tooth which resulted in a tiny cut on my finger. Within 2 days I was in my doctor's office who threatened to send me to the hospital. Heavy antibiotics got me back to work having gotten about 5 days behind. Lessons learned: Always wear rubber gloves handling critters, Rubber gloves don't stop a cut, Don't pull teeth from nasty skulls with my hands. Also, doctors make a heck of a lot more an hour than I do.--Aaron H.

i tried boiling and pulling over and over again. finally i just had to break the jaw cause the tusk was so long that it had a slight turn to is and the other one had like a knot in it. it was pretty weird looking. does any one no how i might be able to get them scored and had a fellow taxidermest look at the and he said he never saw tusks that big before. they both are 9 inches long. please email me
