Do we need to pickle a hide before applying alum, borax and salt formula. Chrome and aluminum tanning solutions are acids but alum mixture is anot an acid. What is the difference.

I would pickle the cape before trying to tan it,that will help take soluable fats out of the skin, help tighten your hair ,will make the skin like a sponge so that your tanning solution will penetrate, and will stablize the hide while you make up your mind as to what tanning solution to use or not to use-I would study the archives if I were you just to gain a little more insight into the tanning process-not trying to be smart-just trying to help.
