i think ive been had. i took a bull moose in 2002, took it to local taxidermist. he had it a year & 3 months. when i got it back,it looked good at first glance. when doing measurments to hang, i noticed the antlers are not even straight. it's been sitting in my dinning room for the last 5 months now it's starting to stink. i do a little taxi for myself, but i didn't think i was up for that job. also when i brush the hair it looks like a lot of fine dust comes out. dry preserve maybe? i was under the assumption of getting a tanned cape. before i call this guy i'm trying to weigh out what my options are. guy charged my 600.00. a new cape i'm assuming is 350.00+. what would some of you do. thanks in advance.

I wouldn't shave your cape for $600 on a moose much less mount it. Sure sounds like DP and a POOR fleshing job. Even DP won't smell when done right.
Deer heads are going for more than 600.00 today. You pay peanuts, you get monkeys.

A typical moose mount generally costs between $800-$1,500 depending on who does the work. The price you quoted is very suspect. The guy who did the work had to cut corners to make a profit at that amount and may have done it by using a dry preservative. Im not sure if you have much recourse with the guy, unfourtuneatly you many have to chalk it up to a lesson learned. The options you have are to live with it as it is, remount it(but your looking at $300-$500 for a new cape plus the cost of mounting it), or cut the antlers off and have a qualified taxidermist make an antler panel for you. Youre not the first person who has been uphappy with their final product, it does happen. But you are wiser now, and will take the time to evaluate quality over a low price next time.
