Problem with Epo-Grip Bleeding thru

Submitted by Don on 07/27/2004 at 13:36. ( ) 206.50.25.187

I covered the back of a coyote pedestal with tanned leather deer hide. It has a red-brown color to it. I used Epo-Grip hide paste to glue it to the form. Couple days later I noticed it had bled thru in a few spots. The areas are very dark now. The stains are located in just one "corner" and cover maybe 20% of the back.
Anyone had this problem before? Is there away to prevent this from happening? I have used the same method several times and have not had this happen.
Any suggestions on what to use to "blend" the existing stains by giving the back a modeled look? Maybe linseedoil?

Don,

Which hide paste was it the waterbase or epoxy? I'm sure we or someone can offer some advice if we have more specifics. Call me at 800-888-2467 if you would like to discuss this in detail.

I "spoke" with Steve on this before...

because I'd used Epo-Grip epoxy in securing the leather on antler mount forms. Like you claim, the epoxy tended to discolor the leather unevenly over the surface. So, I just took brown boot polish and coated the entire thing good, then polished it up. The result was a beautiful, distressed leather look that I have reproduced intentionally on other cases ever since.
