Can oil be added to the tanner (then tumble)or should it be brushed on to keep it off the long hair?

..I do in my Auto Tanner, I always brush on the oil after the hide is tanned and shaved. I tried the oil in with the tan once and found it made the hair side a complete mess. You also have better control of where and how much oil is being applied when you brush it on. I also make sure the face gets a good deal of oil, especially around the nose pad and eyelids.
