Along with a couple of hunting companions, I just received a crate of trophies. The heads were mounted in South Africa and shipped in a large crate. Most arrived in great condition. However, the crate was damaged, and several of the heads were loose in the crate. Damage is relatively minor; dings, scrapes and minor gouges - some more noticeable than others. All the trophies are now on the wall.
The cartage company will pay reasonable repair costs. My question is who should we look for to estimate the damages and do the repairs. We live in San Antonio, Texas.

Thats good for you, so you saved a few dollars by having substandard work done. The workers were paid almost nothing. While you saved a few dollars on one end.
Now you ask an American Taxidermist to bid on repair work.
Americans are good enough to do the repair work, but not good enough to do the mounts?

CB, Check around in your area with taxidermists. Most anyone can do competant repairs that has some broad experience in taxidermy. In fact there are so many taxidermists that do outstanding African work that what you need is not very special at all. I hope you got good work and are happy with your trophys, many people get their mounts done "there" thinking the work will be better when in fact much of it is not done well at all. -Aaron H.
Send them back to Africa for your repairs. Hunters are getting worse. Bigger more costly trucks fancy guns big tips for the guides and then turn into Mr. Cheepo when it comes to getting the trophy mounted. The mount is what you will be looking at the rest of your life
Maybe some of you didn't realize that sometimes taxidermy is included in the hunt package and alot of booking agents make it sound harder than it is to send them back dipped and ready for a taxidermist.
