Is there a basic rule of thumb for the amount of wall space needed to mount a large head, like that of a trophy elk? If you are mounting above a fireplace, what are the typical rules of thumb for how much wall space you need and how high the ceiling has to be in order to fit the mount without it looking cramped?

95% of the mounts that get damaged are from haning over a fireplace.
There is a lot of heat rising out if fireplaces. Temps are 30F higher.

Expect to have it remounted every 10 years. New cape and possibly new form.
I think a lot depends on the type of fireplace and the mantle. I've got a brick fireplace with a decent sized mantle above it and most of the heat (ehich is very little btw) gets trapped under the mantle. Then if I feel above the mantle we're back to normal again temperature-wise. I don't have any animals hanging over the fireplace (wife won't let me - lol!) so I'm kinda shooting from the hip here. But I'd think in my situation there wouldn't be much if any detrimental affects to any mounts hanging above my fireplace? Unless the dryness of the air causes premature cracking or something?
