I've got a friend who killed a big bull with his bow. I was just wondering what you charge. I don't get in many elk, but do a lot of deer and antelope. Thanks for your help....Steve

And the prices ranged from $350.00 to about $1200.00 the average price was about $700 to $900.00. I am in the same boat as you. I had never done one either. But my price list I charged $600.00 plus $100.00 extra for open mouth. But since I started this elk, fleshing cape, salting, and pickling and shaving I already changed my price. It is hard work so do not underprice even if it is a friend. My new price is now $800.00 for open mouth. And depending on the rest of the work I may make it higher than that. We will see.
What do you charge for a whitetail deer? Well, an elk is over twice times the size of the average whitetail. So multiply your whitetail price by 2.5. Then add $100 for an open mouth (I charge that extra on all open mouths). Elk are big critters and not a lot of fun after you've done your first one. I can't see charging less than $900 for the basic mount and then adding on. If you're tanning your own hides, it won't take you over that initial one to bring those prices up to bear. Just shaving that big bedsheet of a hide is back breaking enough to wise you up.
900-1200 is a good all around figuresince the cost of everything is increasing these days its also a good idea to check the prices of loacal taxidermists in your area if any just to keep your prices consistent to theirs so your not undercutting anybody else especially your own pocket book also like george said open mouth is extra along with pedestal mounts and base work if they dont want your average wall mount elk.
