I had a guy call my shop the other day wanting me to come pickup a buffalo from his farm that a client of his had shot. This all went great I was there while butcher was working so I made sure there were no skinning mistakes and also got to know the client a little bit. I have never done any large animals before only whitetail sized animals skin preps the same I have him fleshed salted and drying in my shop, I have started rolling the hide so I will be able to ship it latter but im wondering what is this thing going to be like when I start trying to sew and taxi this big bugger on the form. Are there any tricks to this is there any problems that I could be looking out for ahead of time? Also wondering about shipping do tanners usually ship back wet? I live in ND client lives in AZ any advice on shipping finished mount back to him, any advice on carriers, anyone know a ballpark figure on freight back to him. I probably should have investigated some of this before I took on the job but I got the call at 10:00 at night to be there at eight the next morning, didnt leave me alot of time for research, although I am sure that I charged enough to cover all costs. Also should I pass freight back to him along to him or should I cover it?
Alot of ? I know any advice is greatly appreciated
Thank you

Bufffalo mount up pretty easy just a little heavy. I set mine on the edge of a table while sewing it is alot easier than my mounting stand.Tanners will ship wet tanned it weighs a little more than dry and some will ship 2nd day air about 60 dollars I send mine to golden state tannery in California there turn around on wet tans is about 2 weeks. tanning on a buffalo is around 300 dollars. as far as shipping you should tell your customer the cost of the mount. then tell him the cost of crating and let him pay the freight when it gets to him. you can call a freight company and get him an ball park figure. good luck
Most of the bison capes we have tanned are dry tanned. They re-hydrate very easily with good stretch. Taxidermists have sponged down the leather side, bagged, and sweated overnight. One benefit of this is that we clean and comb out the hair, so the sponging will not mess up the air. We have also done wet tans for others.
