Cape buff problem

Customer brought back a cape buff I mounted about two years ago. The skin has a fine white "mold" on parts of the mount. Cannot see the "mold" at a distance, but up close, looks like an old pair of moccasins that haven't been worn in 20 years! The customer lives on the gulf coast of Texas. What are my options? Never seen this before!

It could be mold, and probably is, but it could also be something leaching out of the fur. Borax is hygroscopic and will leach out through leather or skin. Customer brought me a muley mount for re-caping. I hung it downstairs under the house. Two days later it was covered in DP....looked like hoar frost.

Mold is common here and a constant battle. There are a number of fungicides available and cleaning materials that will deter mold, but frankly, if that head continues to hang in the same environment, I hope you like it, because you will see it again

I don't dress up too often any longer, and whenever I do, I have to wipe the mold off my dress shoes. We have tried damp rid, heated closets and everything else, but we still have mold problems now and then. I have a cape buff that I mounted in 1983 that doesn't have any problem, nor do other mounts hanging here. I had them all tanned outside the shop though at Pepys in CA. Don't know what process he used.

Get that in Florida on mounts near the ocean and it tends to be salt in the air, I just wash the skin and with a brush and dry in the sun,
The air in Fla is very salty near the ocean everything rusts.
