Raven - Question on your "Rot Box"

Raven, In the archives while researching dermestids and maceration, I came across your basic description of the "Rot Box". You made mention of " 1/4" Hardware Cloth". Could you provide some clarity as to the material? Can't say I've heard of it, or I may know it, only under another name. I have a button buck skull I'd like to try your method on & any additional info you could provide on your box would be greatly appreciated. Happy New Year by the way and my thanks in advance!

Hardware cloth is a type of wire mesh. It is sort of like chicken wire, but with square holes and a stiffer wire. You can get it at most hardware stores. Galvanized is good as it won't rust.

As for additional info there really isn't much to it... it's simply a way to keep your skull outside to let nature have it's way with it.. WITHOUT having lil critters bugger off with some of your boney bits. Other people will hang skulls in trees or on tops of roofs etc. This way is even more secure than that (crows and jays can get to tops of roofs, squirrels n coons can get into trees). With a rot box and a heavier gauge wire - the only thng you really need to worry about are large critters that REALLY want at it. It has another advantage of being on the ground where lots of insects can get at it easily.

Hope that helps =)

I am not Raven but.

I have a rot box. I did not make mine though. It is just a large steel dog cage. It is probaly 2 feet X 4 feet and a bout 30 inches tall. I put my stuff in and close the door and voila nothing can get to it. It is also collapsible if you want to take it down it folds flat.
