man i had a hell of a time trying to shave off fat and meat off a bison cape. even when i got the thing salted it weighed 45lbs. now maybe triple that if you get it wet trying to tan it yourself. its possible if you maybe set up a winch and pulley system, but the shaving alone is back breaking. at least for me it was and im 23 yrs old and im kicking highschoolers butts at wrestling practice 4x's a week. personally i would've like to save the $ and do it myself, but no way i could do it. maybe someone else has had a better experience with them.
Bite the bullet and send it out. Shaving those is alot of work and mk is right they are very heavy. I would be cautious with the "crowtan". I have never used it but if I did it would be for small animals only. You want a nice tan job on that bison so it will hold up. Im sure the customer is paying close to $1,000 so leave it to a good professional tannery. Just my .02 cents
