There is a guy here that was, and I think still is doing them for
$169.00 . I had to put that by itself so that even I could believe it. When I called, last year, he said that he got his forms cheap. He also Dry preserves. I haven't seen any of his work but... I started taking classes last Sept. and I charge $300. I don;t know how he is coming out ahead.

Depends on where you live...

the price can vary from even from town to town in the same state. Depends on what your competition charges. I think you are selling yourself short if you charge to little. If you honestly think that your work is quality and worthy of charging money then add it up.

Roughly, you can figure $55 for the form, eyes and earliners shipped. Then you have $35 or so in tanning, then add another $20 paying shipping to and from the tannery. Then you have hide paste, clay, thread, needles, paints, mache, epoxy putty etc. Those are hard to put a finger on cost since they lend themselves to several mounts. Regardless, you have over $120 in parts alone in the mount. Then you have to figure how much time is involved. I think $400 is a pretty moderate price for a deer mount. I am only part-time and I will be increasing my prices next year to probably $495 for a deer mount. That is for the western slope of Colorado though, in the Denver area it would be a tough sell at that price since everyone else around there charges less.

just the form from a supply comp. or the finished deer?

Wal-Mart taxidermist

We have a local taxidermist whom does good work and was priced at over $400.00 in the past and then this last fall, they dropped their price to $300.00. You only have one selection, straight with ears forward.I am assuming that the price would go up if you chose a different position.I am not sure how many more heads that they took in, but I am assuming that it increased. Their goal I had heard is to be the Wal-Mart taxidermist of the area. We will watch to see how it plays out.
