Think of it this way............

..................remove the skin from the shield instead of the shield of the skin. I use a scalple blade, or should I say a several, and peel the skin away using the blade to cut and the fingers to pulldown.
I roll the skin in my fingers of my left hand, pulling away and down, while making small slices with my right hand.
Keep at it and before you know it, your done!

Don has it right.

If that's all you have, it will work. I always cut the shield in one or two inch strips and shaved down one strip at a time. If you have an ulu knife, it works marvels with this thing. Good luck.

serrated fillet knife

I take a retractable razor, the orange ones at wal mart and cut the sheild in one inch strips. then take my serrated fillet knife and peel each strip off, i can usually take a sheild off in 30 to 40 minutes. the serrated blade will out cut any strait bladed knife in this application than any i've seen.

is right as usual. Go to Wal Mart and get a ULU knife, it's one of the best investment I have.

A fleshing machine wont work on a hog shield..I burned up a DakotaII fleshing machine on a hog shield once.

Get a BIG knife/machete and go to town on it. Start from the back of the cae and take off 2" sections at a time and slowly move to the front of the cape as you go. I dont one last month that has grissle 3" think at the thickest point.

Are the crescent shaped knives with the wood handles affixed to the back side of the blade that Eskimos use. They are sharpened on one side only and work much like the principle of the fleshing wheel.

And YES, a fleshing machine WILL take the shield off a boar. At least a GOOD machine will. That's all I ever use. I set the bite a little deeper on the blade, put up a splash shield in front of the machine and then drive that sucker home.

Very efficient for Hogs, also you might want to consider asking your tannery if they would do it, I had one like that one time when my arthritis was real bad, so I called and the tannery told me to cut the shield into 1 inch strips and salted heavely specially between the stips and send it to the, it came back beautifully thinned and tanned.

Draw knife not sharp enough

As the name would suggest I do a lot of hogs. With a sharp draw shave and a beam I can flesh a pig like yours in 20-25 min. Your knife is only to sharp when you loose the ability to control it.You wouldnt try to cut a tough steak with a butter knife would you ?
