on what you are mounting and the form. Generally for a deer you do not have to, but that again depends on the form.
I cut the bases to match the contour of the form. And I decide the angle i want the ears prior to mounting, and trim the plastic where needed.
I then make a ring of clay around the base of the liner to form a bond with the form. I often smear some clay on the form too, then I can blend the clays together.
Did you mean you are using earliners without the butts? The drilling question makes me think maybe you mistyped?
