on a hog?
Return to Gamehead Taxidermy Category Menu
The shield on a hog is a tough gristly layer on the shoulders of a boar. Sows usually do not have a thick shield. nor do young boars. This shield is an adaptation to prevent serious damage to each other in territorial Bouts. A mature Boar can have a shield as thick a 4 inches. This is of concern To Taxidermist because it must be removed for mounting. Although I have only done one boar. It was an old timer. And had a thick shield. It took me hours to remove it.
it would be like shoulder pads in football. Hogs have a shield under the skin on each shoulder. Some can be up to an inch thick. It is very hard cartledge the size of a dinner plate and is sometimes very hard to remove. Other times, it can be sliced off with just a little bit of work.
You have answered all my curiosities.
