Need a good source to appraise an African collection

Submitted by Chris on 5/18/05 at 9:30 PM. ( ) 68.118.138.104

I am trying to help out a fellow who is trying to sell off a small collection of African horns, most are European skull mounts. Is there a good way of determining the value of the collection?

Is there a good source for replacement capes for African animals?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Chris

He has advertised in the Safari Club magazines and newsletters. You may also, possibly get the number from Cindy Crain(NTA) or the Blomquist's(Breakthrough Magazine).

There are too may varibles in your question. If you post a list of the species and the size of the horns, we might be able to give you some numbers.

African horns, especially the common game, are sold very regularily both here and on Ebay. Even if the trophies are large, they may not be worth a huge amount just because the demand isn't there like it would be for a B&C whitetail. If the mounts are full skull, without damage, that could add some value. On the rarer species it is difficult(and EXPENSIVE) to get capes so someone looking to mount the head is not likely to spend a lot on the horns when the cape will be a huge expense.

If you would post a phone number or email address when making a request like this, you would likely get more help. There is just no way to give you a blanket answer to a question like this.
