Matted fur - Generally Scruffy

Submitted by Sam on 5/21/05 at 3:25 PM. ( sam22bennett@hotmail.com ) 207.177.14.30

I just mounted my first coyote shoulder mount the other night. It is a very prime fur, but after mounting, the fur just isnt fluffy anymore. Ehat should i wash it with? can I just shampoo the whole mount? It is really bad behind the ears and near the seam. The mount looks pretty good, but it would look so much better if the hair would fluff up. Thanks, Sam

and type in "back brushing" as far as cleaning, Oderless paint thinner on a rag & wipe the mount down. you realy should not wash it with shampoo because it can "wash out" the tan. Joe

never heard of washing out a tan

by shampooing? I wash and shampoo my mounts and skins all the time, but I do use a commercial tan. I also steam clean and brush my mounts with a jiffi steamer. It really makes a difference for the better.

and backbrush (brush against the grain) VIGOROUSLY and the hair will magically fluff up

I shampoo ALL furbearers after mounting and allowing dry time. Makes any half decent mount look great. Don't worry about the tan, wet, lather, rinse and blow dry. The skin itself will not take on the water much at all since it had already dried after mounting. Try it once and you will do it every time. I just shampooed 2 elk shoulder mounts-what a difference! Enjoy, Aaron H.
