Red Stag Ears

Submitted by Allen on 6/16/05 at 3:28 PM. ( )

Hi, I mounted a red stag last month and I just checked it and the ears did not set up very hard. I had it commercially tanned. I tried to scew them with 5 inch screws but the ears are still moving. What else could I do to make the ears secure. Thanks, Allen

What did you use for the earbutts?

I take it from your description that the earbutts are not secure on the form, is that correct? Sounds like you didn't use enough clay in the earbutts to give the ears a good junction and connection to the form. Basically you have a hollow area between the earbutts and the form with leftover hide.

I would rehydrate and open up the seam and add more clay to that area and some good glue like Epo-Grip. Make sure you have a good junction going into the head. Even with the seam open your ear should be secure on the form and not moving around if you have enough clay in there. Once the ear is secure against the form and doesn't move, sew up the seam again.
