longhorn steer horns

I have a pair of longhorn steer horns that have been in my family for awhile. The two horns are attatched in the center by leather in a tube shape appox 1/2 foot long. It looks like the horns each have a end cap made of wood, that is inserted into each end of the leather. One of the horns has a crack in it, and is breaking off at the end inserted into the leather. I live in Denver, and was wondering where a place to take it, and hopefully fix it in a quality manner. Thanks!

Sounds like the cheap sets that came out of Mexico in the 40's and 50's. I just repaired a set my dad has had for nearly 65 years. These were actually horn cases slipped over a whittled, wooden gudgeon. Then the cases were nailed to the gudgeon and the work was hidden by leather or felt being wrapped over it.

Over the years, your cases have become brittle and the nails have splintered the horn. To repair it, get some epoxy clear paste and repair them. Seat them back on the same gudgeon, but this time glue them. Rewrap the horns and you're set to go.
