Ordinary degreasers may help but the problem is - they are difficult to wash out afterwards. Buy a good Lanolin cutting degreaser like our Wool Degreaser product (Catalog #WD-608). It cuts Lanolin, which in turn frees up all the dirt and debris the wool holds, and it rinses away free. No residual in the wool. When the Wool is nice and clean - people will think you bleached it - but its only been cleaned.
for the Mattings - snip away any balls of manure and use a Pet detangling comb to cut out and remove the mattings.
