Salting an Elk Cape

Submitted by Mick on 9/24/05 at 7:34 PM. ( ) 63.18.31.226

I have mounted many deer over the years, but I had a customer bring me in an elk. Boy are they different than deer. My problem is getting the hide to dry in the salt process. I have turned everything, then I laid the hide out over an aluminum rack and salted it. I changed the salt after 24 hours, then again another 24 hours later, and yet one more time the next 24 hours. Now we are going on day 4 and the hide still feels wet around the neck area. It was a mature bull.

So how long does it usually take to get the moisture out? Am I jumping the gun? I ask this question because I am going out of town tommorrow for 1 week and don't want to loose this cape.

Thank You

depending on your location, humidity may play a factor in what your trying to accomplish, sometimes i place my capes in a cardboard box turned over with a dehumidifier in front , usually does the job.
