Advice on a Mouflon Ram problem

Submitted by Tony on 9/17/05 at 1:06 PM. ( bc195nt@yahoo.com ) 12.65.42.131

Need some advice or suggestions on how to deal with a problem on a mouflon ram cape.

I shot a 30" plus mouflon in Texas and had my taxidermist flesh it out and have it tanned...a wet tan. When the cape came back it was "tacky" to the touch...almost greasy. He wsashed it a few time and got most of the stickiness out. The mounted head (it mounted so I know I'm limited on the remedies) looks fine except that it is still very tacky to the touch....it will be a dust collector for sure.

Any suggestions on what can be done to eliminate (or minimize) the tackiness of the hair? Any suggestions on what to use to clean it if it starts collecting dust too badly.

Thanks in advance, I'd appreciate any help.

My spelling is horrible but your problem is the lanlion in the hair is not cleaned out, to acceptable standards.
A good degreaser would have fixed this in the begining. You may try washing the mount quickly with a dgreaser and get it rinsed and dried quickly. If it were me I would have the taxidermist that mounted it, fix it, period. good luck

What degreaser would you recommend

Paul, What degreaser product would you recommend?

Epo-Grip or one of its equals

Epo-Grip blood out degreaser should do the trick, a little on the pricey side though. Most degreasers on the market, should do the trick. Good luck

Hang on...

Before you go out an buy something you dont need (since you're not a taxidermist) try getting you some laquer thinner. Pour some on a clean cloth and wipe down the hair with the grain. Change the cloth around to keep from rubbing the same grease over and over on the hair. Laquer thinner dries realy fast and odorless so it wont hurt your mount.
