I recently took delivery of a very beautiful full mounted blonde Coyote by a taxidermy.
When I went to pick it up they informed me that it still had a slight smell, inspite of them washing and washing the hide. One of the gentlemen told me he felt that it would eventially go away.
When I shot this coyote it was apparent it had been wallering in something dead. The taxidermy said they found maggets in his fur.
I had a very hard time finding someone who would even take my business, they all responded it was hard to remove smell.
This is a very Good looking Mount I am very pleased with the way this Coyote is set and the Habitat looks wonderful also.
I am curious if they left out a taning step or did not get all the oil out or what?
BUT MORE IMPORTANT what can I do with the coyote already mounted to try to eliminate the smell? It is way to BEAUTIFUL not to show it off in my home.
I am spraying with febreze on a regular basis.
I am asking for any suggestions.
Thank you and God bless.

First find out how the hide was treated? Did the coyote get tanned? And if so was it in house or did it get sent out? If they sent it to a reputable tannerier there should be no smell other than a tanned hide smell. If it was done in house, there is a good possibility a step could have been missed or DP was used on the hide.
PS when it's done right there is no smell. I do countless coyotes and none ever smelled bad when I was done tanning and or mounting them.
If that coyote still smells, like something other than tanning chemicals I would look for a new taxidermist next time.

Thanks Frank and Chris, for your response
I am not sure what they did. Do you have any suggestions own how to try to eliminate the oder after the fact. Like I said earlier I am using febreeze.
I wonder if finding a means or some source, to place the mount in a vacuum would that make it off-gas the oder quicker or would it just come back when it was exposed to atmosphere and or moisture.
Any suggestion or response is appreciated
God bless
Go to a local carpet cleaning warehouse or www.cleansource.com they have very strong deodorizers you can purchase. I run a carpet cleaning buisness/taxidermist and i have used some of these products to eliminate odors before. If you can't find what im talkin about feel free to email me at truillusions1@aol.com
