I was wondering how long it takes on average to clean a Steer Skull and Sheep Skull with Dermisted Beetles? Also just out of curiosity of one who has never seen the beetles in action.... does it smell?
Thanks

the size of your dermistid colony and there probably will be some smell associated with it.
...does it take to do a steer skull?
I started with a colony in a small jar, now I have them in a 36" glass cube. It only took a day to do a deer head and I have no idea how many are in there but just the ones that where left on the skull when I took it out was probably around 200. it also took several months to get my colony this big and this fast at cleaning. As far as the smell its not too bad, most of it is the head itself, but now that the beetles clean them faster the smell is not as strong.
not an in the house thing then? I wanted to start a colony to start cleaning skulls but i can't keep them outside because they will freeze.... and i dont have an insulated building with central heat to keep them in. Plus it can get really cold here(20 below) So I guess i will have to start in the spring and solve this problem by next winter.
any suggestions for a beginner?
Thanks
Shelby
We have several containers 8' x 8', and you would not beleive how well a 60 or 100 watt light bulb will heat and maintain a good tempurature.
Didn't think of that. Maybe that would work in my situation.
