What kind of stitch are you using?

What I have found is

On the few deer that I have done. If you have a hard time getting your seem together then it will show somewhat, But if I take close stitches and have the right size form and the hair patterns all lined up the seem doesn't show at all. After I sew it up Not having to pull hard but just good and snug, I will TAP the seem with a small hammer to flatten it out. Do NOT hit it hard you WILL leave dents that WILL show if you do. Or atleast they do on short hair deer. Also make sure to not get hair caught in your stitching or it will stand. I like to enter the skin side 1/8-1/4 in and exit the hair side right at the edge.

Mane

I is possible that the deer had a mane. I raise deer and some of my bucks do have a little mane, or cow lick looking pattern in the back of their heads. If you are getting it on all your deer i would say that you are catching too much hair when you are sewing. You can also wet that hair slightly and card it down. This will work for you too. Just depends on the particular deer i guess.

small stitches

sounds like youre spacing is to far apart, and or you're collecting alot of hair when you close youre hide. extra hide doesnt have any where to go but up and some clumps of hair under it doesnt help in the matter. take a little xtra time and get you very sharp cape needle and pull your thread through with about an 1/8 inch spacing next time and lightly work your hair out of the closing loops with a small brush also make sure youre using good quality cape thread(lightly mist the hair if need be for keeping hair away). you iwill be in awe of yourself on how good you did. also try putting a little dippity doo on the seam and then stapling a strip of 1/8 hardware cloth over it until it drys that really seals the deal!if you ever wanna try something different on sewing youre deer go to the fishing store and ask for"power pro microfilament line 65 lb. test) that stuff is the crap!

I have only done a few deer and basically I plagiarized TOO. You see its like this, what I do now is what I have found in the archives, and this has been answered before, I just felt Like typing tonight.

The only thing I didn't say was I use fire line in about 45lb test and a small needle. Since switching to it and getting my forms the right size I have not had to even card my seams down. I still get an unruly hair or two but simply just pluck it out and no problems. I would not pluck out more then a few, but that is what works for me. Randy may want to try and card as you described as well. Responses and opinions is what makes this site work. Have fun no worries.

The BIG Trick......

......To getting a nice seam, is to have the hide fit together easily before you ever use your needle and thread. If you have to stitch and pull the hide together with your stitches....The form is TOO BIG! After that, the shorter the hair, the closer the stitches have to be.
