A farmer nearby is preparing to butcher a beauty of a highland cow.She (yes, she) has very nice, long, even horn and very shaggy hair.I want to mount it and the farmer is waiting for an offer.I don't know how to set a fair price and was wondering if anyone here would. If any others here have done a shoulder mount Highland, what form did you use?

Custom form, worse than a buffalo to tan and comb, Tanner will charge you twice Buffalo price. You'll have to skin and flesh it , that's an all day job in it'self.Form and alteration 500.00 shipping form 100.00 tanning 400.to 500. then mounting, dealing with it just being a pain in the *ss, If your charging less than 2,500.00 your going to loose you butt. It's not the job for an AMATEUR.Better know what your in for.
If you have to ASK for a form than it's not the job for you.
You'll have about 1,200 in expenses but then agian if you mount deer heads for 275.00 then you'll do the job for 1,200 and end up doing it for free or the client will never get it.
Why do people come here and ask how much should I charge?...DAH... if you can't fiqure out your cost and profit margin and don't have any business sense get out of the business, and go work for someone else that has a brain.Does GM call Chrysler up and ask, What should I sell my cars for?...DAH
I meant (pretty clear to the functional literate) what should I "offer" for the cape for me,myself to buy-for me myself to own and me myself to mount for the customer-me.I usually am very good at setting prices for this customer (me) as he knows I did not invent taxidermy, and have not reached high guru of the temple of Derm status like you.But I digress.I am to dumb to figure out of the many suitable forms,(all forms are of equal quality of course and any will require that I grind them into dust, reconstitute and sculpt myself) which to choose by mere divination alone.
And by the way Guru, custom form? There are a few highland forms out there.Jonas,Research etc.. If I confused you with the word offer, perhaps its not I who lacks business sense. How much do you pay your customers?
They make a cream for that
a little more than what the butcher would pay for the hide. Of course you will have to cape it... So my advise is to ask "Ernest the butcher", what a hide is worth for the leather market. Offer a little more....
thank you for a straight forward answer gordo
Not a thing, they pay me 2,500 to mount a Highlander
Sounds like the issue is what is it worth to you, as you are the one looking for a trophy speciman to mount. Have you found them easy to come by or not. How nice is this animal as compared to others you have seen or had the opportunity to purchase. Do you really want to have this trophy, or have you found the similar availability cheap and easy access. Is it as accessable as a small bull elk which I have seen for sale, fresh for between $275 to $350 on this site, or more like mule deer at a much much lower price. If you have been looking for Highlanders you should have an idea of how nice this animal is and how easy they are to come by. An unusually nice animal with an exceptional rack could be a real prise, while one that is pretty average would not be so special. What does your research and gut desire tell you. Good Luck!
P.S. The response from "Hemmroid" was well fitted to the title. WHAT A JERK!
seemed like everyone else did too..........except for the 1
