I asked this question a few days ago. I do not like to use harsh solvents in my premises. The last few whitetails I have degreased, I have soaked in heated water for about an hour with Dawn. Note: This is hot water, mild simmer, not boiling. A response to my post said he uses Arm&Hammer laundry detergent. This is probably better, and I plan to try it in a few days. Allow them to air dry in a cool shady place for a day or so before whitening. I put a zip tie aroud the nose to keep the skull from opening on the front as it dries. Elk, I find are a little more difficult to degrease. There is a small amount of yellowing on the forehead between the beams. If this does not disappear after whitening, (35% peroxide in MgCarb powder for 3 days, rinse, followed by a couple of days in the sun) I mist it with Polytranspar Superhide White. I have never had a complaint about appearance on skulls, just aroma. This is why I like using a detergent that emits a nice clean smell from the skull.
