maceration question

I was wondering about having the antlers in the water when Im doing the maceration method of cleaning my skulls. Does it hurt the antlers? does it change the color of them? Or do Inot have to worry about it? I was just asking cuz the container I have to do this in I can only fit 1 or maybe 2 skulls in at a time and the is with some plastic wrapped and taped around the base of the antlers. Just wanted to know if the stinkin bacteria water would hurt the antlers at all? Also how long should it take when I keep the water at room temp. and do I have to take the skulls out and scrape some meat off when I can. Thanks, Kevin

Antlers

If you leave the skulls in long enough, you will not need to scrape anything off, I pressure wash mine clean. Antlers will not be harmed in the water, but by the time you clean the skull, degrease, and whiten, the bases will probably get lighter than the rest of the antler, I usually have to darken the bases, don't know about plastic wrapped around the bases, I think I would take it off.

Thanks

Thanks But I was just wondering if I could put a couple of skulls in the tub and cover the whole things with water and not have to worry about the antlers. And how long should it take for the meat to come off at room temp. Thnaks again, Kevin

I am doing about 26 skulls right now I have them in diffent kinds of buckets and the antlers are all in the water from just a little to covered. I have never had a problem. As far as how long it takes it depends on how much meat you got off in the first place. It takes mine anywhere from 1 week to 6 weeks depending on how much time I had to prep them.
