A customer brought in a very large hog head for a european mount. Just judging by the size of the head, I'd say the hog would have been 300lbs or better. Guy said it was 100lbs maybe a little more. The head alone was 30lbs. Anyway, I didn't notice this when I skinned it, but as I was removing the tongue and stripping the flesh from the bottom jaw, that the bottom jaw appeared to be broken. The strange thing is that about 2 inches of the bone is missing and appears to have been attempting to heal. The ends of the bone are calcified and very pitted. I've seen this before on infected bone. My first thought was that it had been shot through the jaw at some point, but the skin did't indicate that. I'm thinking that it may have had cancer ? Any ideas ?

I recently did an Alaska Dall Sheep for a guy that was 9 years old and had one molar on each side on the uppers that were severly rotted and were almost completely gone. The bone underneath was severly calcified and pitted. I think that it was probably that last year for that ram. It could have been severe tooth decay which inturn weakened the jaw to where it broke?
I didn't think about that, but it would explain it.
