how far up in the horn does the core go - or in other words how much needs to be submerged when you are boiling

Better not to boil those

Better to place in a trash bag and let rot out. Especially these horns. They are thin walled and will warp easy and sometimes wont go back on the core right. After they come off the core, clean out the inside, put some dry preserve in there, plug the inside with news paper just at the end and fill plaster about two inches deep at the end and let the horn dry out thoroughly for a few weeks before removing the plaster. The plaster keeps the end opening in the proper shape since this is where it is likely to warp.

But to answer your question, the bone core goes up usually past the first curve and ends.

Rot em

I am with Hogger let em rot in a trash bag. Propane is high here and it is easier and cheaper to rot em.
