PLease take a look at these photos and let me know what you think. This is my first deer mount, I chose to do a doe first to learn on and save my buck for later.

My Opinion

Don,
I think you did a very nice job for your first deer head. The eyes look good and are finished nice. The nose is finished nice as well. Whether it was the picture or is true the deer's left lip is higher than the right. This doesn't take away from mount but is noticeable. I think it depends on what you are going for. Deer aren't perfectly symmetrical, and sometimes parting from the normal within natural limits gives the mount a more lifelike quality. Some of the best competition mounts come from folks who aren't afraid to try something new. I wish you would of included picture from the side and behind as to judge the ear butts, but all in all I think that for a first mount this is very good. Good Luck. Jeff

Thanks for the input; The lip pulled a little when it dried, I tried to fix it with apoxie sculpt. I do not have any close ups of the back side or ear butts now but I will post some tomorrow. Also thanks to Ken for the input.

Nice Deer

You did a good job. I am going to be doing my first deer in a little while and was wondering if you hand any hints or advice. I plan on buying The Breakthrough Whitetail Taxidermy Manual and mountin and finishing a whitetail by dennis bhen. Did you buy a kit? What supplies did you all use?

Thanks for the compliment. I'm probably a poor one to give advise but here goes. I did not use a kit, I have a few videos and I've been buying supplies and equipment for about a year but the things I's say you need to get by are, first some kind of mounting stand to hold the form, I don't see how you could do it without one. An air brush for the finish work. Good reference photos, I used taxidermy catalogs and hunting magazines, Breakthrough,Taxidermy Today. Clay, hide paste, cape thread etc. I used Apoxie Sculpt and a Dan-Dee nose roller for the nose. Take your time thru the whole process and be sure to pre fit the cape before putting hide paste on the form.

It looks pretty darn good for a first deer. You need to work on using and interperting your refrences but overall it looks pretty good, especially for the first one. Never give up.

Good Job Don !

Good for the first one. I suggest you check out the paint schedules in Breakthough. It will help greatly on the eyes and nose and bottom lip. Looks a little too black. Ears are a little too pink for me. I would tone down just a bit. Otherwise, keep up the good work, and continue to improve.

Thank
