I have 2 antelope to do this year(a first) and I thought I had it all under control untill after reading an article in an old Breakthrough about mounting a rutting pronghorn. I decided to search the archives for more info on the jaw gland before mounting one of them this weekend.
I do not think that I removed them. I have one tanned and one in a pickle. I will remove the gland from the one in the pickle but am not sure what the best way to handel the one that I have already tanned.
I never noticed a gland on either of these antelope but there was an odd section of the skin that seemed denser.
I now know that this is the gland just wish I would have done this research a week ago.
On the tanned antelope how would you go about removing the gland and the odor. I have not noticed any slippage and am praying that I get lucky.
Also want to say thank you to all of you that answer questions on here. I use the archives alot and this site has allowed me to tackle projects that with out it I would have never known where to start on.It is a great tool.

Just use a scalpel to hand shave the area that feels spongy, and see how you do. They still carry a little bit of smell anyway. I personally prefer to have pronghorns tanned commercially, so I dont have the best answer if you still need to "deoderize" afterwards.
at this point I would hand shave with a scalpel as bill suggests, once the gland is removed I would brush with dawn straight out of the bottle and let sit overnight.
rinse, and if there is still some odor, borax or dp that small area.
Thanks for the info.Would you put the dawn on the flesh side or work it into the hair?
With dawn having a high ph could it cause slippage in the tanned skin.
to the tannery. All I have ever done is cross hatched the gland with a scalpel, making sure to get down to the hide, then packed the salt in really good. When they get back from the tannery I shave with a scalpel. Never had any problems.
