I feel like im being a pain because i keep asking questions ever step of the way. My first deer head i have done in many years has been drying now for 9 days. i noticed a small gap ( and i do mean small gap ) around the eyes where it pulled away while drying. What do you guys and gals put arond the eyes to fill that gap. also McKenzie page 535 they sell something called brite eyes. is that worth buying.
I want to thank everyone for all your help every step of the way. my first deer came out great because of all your help
thank you John H

Works good, on page 618 of your McKenzie Catalog. And then you can Airbrush over it.
Good Luck
Some shrinking of the clay is normal. Fill it with apoxie and paint.
Your can try to allow the clay to dry a little more before you apply the skin. This will help in two ways, one lets your skin slid by with out taking the clay with it. It also helps in poistioning the eye skin, gooey clay always shrinks more, when more water is added.
I hope that makes sense. I normally set my eyes then get my ears ready. You can speed this along with a hair dryer.
Hope it helps
John,
If your interrested i have a shoulder mounting Whitetail video. It goes from start to finish . Covers Apoxie and airbrushing along with the the rest of the finish work. If you pay for Shipping you can have the video. Just after you get it down packed than give it to another person who is starting out for the same deal.Let me know.
i like the idea of letting the clay dry a little first. i was wondering because i wet my finger to smooth out the clay does this make the clay to wet and shrink more thanks
I use Sally Dahms finishing wax on small openings. This works well. I heat it up and apply it with my lip tuck tool. Dries quickly.
or any similiar products worrk great
is the way I learned, then paint. Also some clear fingernail finnsh on the edge of the lower lid brings the eye to life
