Working on my first merino sheep. The thing has really long thick wool. If I comb it all out, the thing is gonna look like it has an afro. You don't normally see them in nature all combed out, ( I think ). The wool is pretty clean, but does have some areas of matting and grit stuck in it. I would appreciate any suggestions you could offer.

If you don't want to comb it out, that's you. I usually do, and I CHARGE for the work. You need a good curry brush to make it good and you work with a small area and continue to circle the mount until it's done.
This is one of those things that some people may want done and others may not. And thier choice wouldn't affect you adversly either way. Except, like George says, you charge for the combing. Seems to me you almost answered your own question (as far as your personal preference) when you mentioned all that you saw as the negatives of combing it out. The great majority of my customers want it natural, as is.
