I just received a roller form rougher from Ben Mears today, and I have to say..wow. What a TIMESAVER! Ken Wampner posted a message a week or two ago in here about the roller rougher, so I asked him a few questions about how it was working for him, and after that decided to order one.
It's a roller that's 5 or 6 inches wide or so, and has a mulitude of different rollers with small "puncture" teeth in it. You roll it back and fourth and it creates little 3/16 inch or so holes in the form.
This eleminates sanding, except for a little in some detail areas.
It also allows a little of the shiny release to be left on the form.
I haven't tried mounting yet on the form, but I will on Friday, and I'm sure it will result in extreme ease as far as taxiing the skin goes.
Just wanted to share this, as I think it's a new tool that should save a lot of time, and help out in the area of sanding or stout roughing forms (which if you're like me, think it sucked!)

not being a smart a..(actually yes i am)-read the first sentence. thanks justin, i take advice on here from a lot of people, but never had from ken. i'm looking forward to paying him a compliment which i have never done in the past. will order it & try it. man i hope you did'nt hang around a bunch of dyslectic kid's as a teenager or you would have had hell with your AKA!
I'm sure it's fine, but I'd never trust "holes" versus "scratches". The hide paste needs places to attach, but if you've ever tried to fill a small hole with glue, you understand the theory of hydraulics and why it's not the most effective method. I spend about an hour maybe two prepping my forms insuring that all that fine detail will take the full advantage of glue. If you're looking for faster, I'm sure the roller is it. If you're looking for better, I don't know if that's going to do what I want it to.
Thanks for your views..I kind of figured you would post on this one, but I thought it was something I would try.
I'm trialing this thing on my own deer from last fall, so I'll give updates on this as far as how the hide holds, any drumming, and so on. I called and talked to a few folks down at Mears supply last week and asked specific questions on hide adhesion and so on, and was "told" it works great.
On the other hand, if it doesn't, I will post a follow up post to this on drawbacks and any issues, and Ben Mears will also get a call from me. For now, I'll give it a try and see how it goes.
George, Don't see how it could take anyone 1-2 hours to prep a form. 6-7 minutes with a stout ruffer scratches the form great plus another 5 minutes with a piece of sandpaper in the creases and around the eyes and I'm done.

to use a vibrating sander like a "Mouse". This is a sander sold at walmart and it has a pointed tip on it. i have thought it might work good even in detail places.
just wondering, Kevin
Kevin,
I use it on the entire deer and it works very well.
I sandblast my forms. It workks so well I cant believe it I can do a deer in 20 min. I need to get a bigger compressor 5hp 20 is not cuttingit any more
