Mounting African heads

Wondering how you folks attach the horns to the skull after boiling. I have always used bondo in the past but have a couple of big Kudu and thought about just pinning them. Sure would make it easier for transporting...Thanks for any ideas...Doug

Doug,

Are you talking about "pinning" like you do a moose or caribou or elk? Most of the african stuff that I get in needs work at the horn/hair line. Because the hairline was cut off lower than it should be and the horn base was boiled off, I usually have to build up a fake horn base. Due to the lack of hair, I think youd end up with a noticable grove. With a moose or elk, you have enough hair to cover up the pinned area. I'd like to see a pic of it if you try it as it would be a neat fix.

One way to do it

leave them loose... set them in bondo but pull them off as it kicks. paint and mount, like mentioned you will need some sculpall to rebuild around the bases for a smooth transition.

Might sound a little hokey, but you cannot tell the difference once it is hanging on the wall.
