A few weeks ago i came across a dead Red Fox on a track (no idea how it was killed) but strangly its coat was mostly silver and black! Its tail looked just like a silver fox's tail and where the hair on the red fox is meant to be white/light grey on the underside and throat area, this was all black. Is this rare? Is it some kind of gene defect or has a red fox bred with something else? appreciate any help. Also i am mounting this head next week so how much do we think it is worth?

uncommon but not "rare"
Can buy em for 55.00 to 100.00
It's a silver fox. Cross fox always have red or orange in them and this one has just silver, black.
They are not rare at all. Maybe they are rare to FIND but not rare in the world.
Good quality ranch pelts in big sizes are $150, but most wild silvers run under $70.
I live in England and the only fox we get is the Red Fox. There are no cross or silvers. I was wondering if one maybe escaped form a park/zoo/farm and bred? possible
What you're seeing is a Red fox (Vulpes vulpes) in a different color phase, cross, silver, etc etc. The other breeds of fox are (if I can remember) the Kit Fox, Arctic Fox and Grey fox...all separate breeds. When talking about Red Fox, think of the colors as you could a Labrador Retriever, Yellow Lab, Black Lab and Chocolate lab are all Labrador Retrieivers in different colors, same dog; a lot of people think they are a different breed, but they are not.
Wolfwoman
at least, Wolfie. Swift fox...
ill see what its worth over here in the uk
At time ,but very rarely will two red foxes have a pure black pup
this is probably why this fox looks this colour.
