I have in the last two years gotten back into taxidermy after 20 yrs.I have been using Joe Meder's deer eyes my question is .Is there a right and left eye .In the catologs there appears to be a downward cast to the contour of the eye .I have noticed that with the pupils lined up straight on a table with the prerotated iris pointing toward each other as in mounted deer ,one iris (or brown part)is pointed up the other down slighty .if this is so then would not the pointed contour of one eye be up and the other one down thereby making it very hard to align the eyes correctly. Is someone not packaging them correctly or am I wrong .

There is no "left" and "right" eye. Both eyes are interchangeable as long as the "bubble" is forward on the eye. Eye ROTATION is left up to the individual taxidermist. It's YOUR responsibility to cant that eye in the direction you desire. Modern taxidermist have been so spoiled by "preset eyes", "positive eyesockets", or eye bases molded into the forms that they've lost all concept of what we lived through with using the real skull or the old paper forms. Because the skulptor decided to set the bases at a particular angle doesn't mean that they shouldn't be altered if that's what you desire.

thanks George

I have been rotating them as needed and I deepen the socket slightly but just happened to notice the difference I mentioned above.I couldn't see any contour difference but wasn't sure.I am very sensitive as to eye position ,I used to mostly look at the antlers mabe the ear position but now to me the eyes are the life of the mount.
