I have to try and turn a deer ear that is shaped like an hour glass, very narrow in the middle section, I can't get the ear turners through the narrrow section. I need to open it up to get a filler or liner in there so it will mount(& tan!). Does anyone have any tips or suggestions?

Tom,you'll probably have to use your scalpel all the way up.Are there wounds or scars keeping you from opening with the ear openers?Regardless ,you'll just have to take your time with the scalpel, you may have areas once done that'll have to be sewn, but you'll get the job done-good luck!
I had an ear that had been torn dmaged due to fighting and then healed up perfect but it was split in half all the way. I just used a scalpel and opened up the center edges, test fitted the liner, marked what to cut out of the center (a big triangle). You HAVE to open it so just go for the easiest repair when you decide what edge to cut open for access.
If you decide that you have to cut the ear to open it,make your cut in from the edge of the ear onto the BACK of the ear about 1/4".This will make the repair easier to hide and does'nt ruin the edge of the ear,
allthe time with hogs. Cut through an ear edge along the narrow section/ Use a scalpel to open the rest of the ear. when you are mounting seww the edge closed, tiny tight stitches, & fill with filler. Repair the edge as necessary when finishing.
