Buffalo mount smell

Submitted by Dan on 5/24/06 at 9:00 AM. ( ) 65.110.111.34

A friend of mine received his buffalo head yesterday and it has a rotten smell to it. This buffalo was shot in Texas and shipped to Pennsylvania via Fed Ex. Prior to leaving the head in Texas, I asked the taxidermist if he tanned his own hides or sent them away. He said that he pickles them.

I also asked how he separates the horns from the core and he said he boils them. The hair doesn't seem to be pulling out, but it is dusty/dirty and has grass remnants in it like it was never even washed.

It is hanging up now, trying to get it to air out and perhaps dry.

Any suggestions on how to deal with this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

What do you mean, perhaps dry? Is it mounted or still in the cape phase? If it is ready for the wall and the skin is dry, quickly wet it down and quickly shampoo it, quickly rinse and dry it. Any mild shampoo will work, if you do not want dandruff, Head & Shoulders. And if you want it soft and manageable,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Its mounted

By "perhaps dry" I meant that maybe if the mount wasn't fully dry, some of the odor would dissipate when it did dry.

Thanks.

first of all Dan it is only pickeled , it should be tanned , and I would make him wash it and brush it.Every time it get damp in your house that smell will come back.
The smell is probably from a very dirty pickeling solution.

Those big bisons or a lot of work , and I charge $1500.00 , but I tan wash , brush, and brush ,and brush.
