Old Bull Elk Head repair

Submitted by Paul on 6/16/06 at 8:49 AM. ( pgust@xmission.com ) 198.60.22.24

I'm replacing the nose and surrounding hair (aboit 3 inches up the face)of a large bull elk that was chewed on by wood rats last winter. The head is old & bleached out. I have the replacement skin but am looking for a good permanent hair coloring or lightener to bleach it out a bit to match the existing hair. I have a spare cow elk face to play with before using the dye or bleaching agent on the replacement skin. I plan to bleach the repair piece before mounting it on the form. Owner doesn't want a new cape. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Paul

That's tough.

I tried bleaching bovine hair once to match a live one using beauty parlor peroxide and the results were marginal. Getting one to match would be tricky business for sure.

I actually had a hair dresser come into the shop for the operation. If you know one that well it might be worth a try.
