Reused Pronghorn

Submitted by Jesse W. on 8/19/06 at 9:46 PM. ( ) 67.140.47.32

I got a pronhorn antelope thats been mounted for about ten years, the hide looks real good. Here's my question- Is it possible to rehydrate and reuse this cape over again. I have a set of Pronghorn antlers to mount on this cape, the oridinal horns are busted up pretty good. What would be the best way to approach this situation. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks again Jesse W.-Penn.

You won't be able to use the cape.Antelope are fragile enough when they are fresh.A 10 year old cape is out of the question. There is a small chance that you could get the horn sheaths off the mount and replace with yours, though I've never done it.Oh,and antelope don't have antlers.

Cut them off

Do as Jim said, cut the side open on the sheaths and pry them off. Clean up the cores, Slide on the new set to test fit, a little work around the bases and bondo or epoxy on. Try that first, if no good, rehydrate the top of the head around the bases with a wet towel and bag it for a day, cut some stitches, move the skin, remove the skull plate and replace with your new set. The problem with that way is the eye work will have to be redone. I've done plenty of whitetail antler changeouts that way with no problems, pronghorn, a little harder.
