When I do a piece for a customer there are a few basic things that I try to keep in mind. In my opinion, contrasting colors and habitat that the animal lives in are key. Also I find that if you use odd numbers of lets say corn stalks or cattails, etc. it tends to balance it out. I dont like to use 2 or four, but rather 3 or 5. Also when it comes to keeping it simple I like the bases that Anthony Eddie makes. They have different colors so you should always find something close to what your looking for. You can poke holes to insert saplings or weeds etc. Im not real partial to the water/glue spray and dirt. I want my customer to be able to take a blow dryer and blow dust off base to keep it clean once in a while. You can hot glue sheet moss or acorns or basically anything you want to this base and achieve the look you want. You dont want to junk up a base, just give it some color and realism. Hope this helps!
